About Dave Onley

I'm an Australian dxer formerly of Melbourne who has been listening to radio since 1976. I have lived in The Netherlands since 2006. I am interested mainly in Mediumwave, DAB, FM. I'm a big DXpeditioner. I travel to remote regions several times per year to hear good dx.

Some really nice UK dx the past few days. Today was different. A few new stations 11A and 12A Crystal Palace, 11D Thanet/Westwood.

Also I had the first logging of 10C Almere. A new Dutch station that came to air this week. Fortunately for now it does not appear to trouble me with UK dx.

Well its been quite a 48 hours on the dx front. Firstly we learnt that here locally 8B became obsolete for dx.

8B Randstad Zuid Holland – Zoetermeer

This was my best channel for Denmark and several Germans. But anyhow its probably the start of many more blocked channels. And to be honest when you look at what 8B carries, its not filled with stations that many people would listen to.

Okay onto a bit of dx

2020 April 18 2020 DAB Logs

Some above average conditions overnight. Conditions I thought were dead at midnight when I went to bed and I decided to throw my antenna northward. Looking at the logs from the night I saw that the UK had indeed returned stronger. I received several stations off the back of the log periodic.

4 new stations for me. 8C was one of the new Dutch stations RegioNoordkop from the delightfully named Hippolytushoef. 6B Markelo has eluded me even though its only 147km away. 5C DR Deutschland Osnabruck & 11D D1 National, Gainsborough in Northamptonshire were the others

2019 April 16 – DAB Logs

The past few days have seen some nice DAB DX from the U.K. It has been fairly localised as you can see by this map. Mostly around the Norfolk Coast but it did drift down to the center of London during the night. The previous night it was good to see Trial Norwich on 9A

3 first timers although not too far away. Usually I get Ipswich/Mendlesham but last night Ipswich/Warren Heath made it for the first time.  Signals during the night made it from the Norfolk coast into the centre of London. Also Wrotham.

October 30 2018 I officially became a PAX man. PAX 128 is the official number given to our official DXpedition to the Arctic Circle.

We flew out from Amsterdam in the wee hours of Tuesday morning with a few stops along the way. Copenhagen, Stockholm and finally to Kiruna in the far north of Sweden.

From Kiruna we stocked up at Kangos and drove onto Parkalompolo. It was -7C when we arrived and the going was pretty slow on the icy road, every so often slowing down for grazing Reindeer.

2017 October – 2018 January, Dxpedition,Veurne – Knollehof, Belgium

In October 2017 and again in January 2018 I was able to dx at Knollehof / Veurne in Belgium not far from the Belgian – French border. Dunkirk is 20 minutes away. We stay at a vacation house just out of Eggewaartskappelle.

As you can see in the photographs, all of the dx is done these days for Mediumwave DX on the excellent Jaguar software. We also use the amazing Perseus SDR receiver which even after 10 years is still the best SDR dx machine around. There are a lot of new SDR’s around but the old girl still out-performs them all.

The antennas we use are 400m beverages. To Japan, Far East, South America, North America and for the first time in January 2018 to Alaska.

2011 November 25-27 Kasterlee DXpedition, Belgium

Our Kasterlee DX HQ 25-27 November 2011

Once a year the fine young men of DX Antwerp in Belgium get together at Kasterlee for a radio DXpedition. Late November is an ideal time of the year in Europe to hear long distance dx. The days are getting shorter and the nights longer. This was my first visit to Kasterlee. I had heard many stories about this location. It is in a forest and somewhat inland from the Belgian coast. I have never been too fond of inland dx sites but on this occasion I was in for a big surprise.

After a bit of a stuff up we finally moved into our chalet type accommodation later than what we had hoped for. A group of young whipper snappers had been there for several days and were reluctant to leave. But we had a belly full of chips and krokets from the local snack shop. Paul Baes opened up a nice bottle of hard liqueur and basically that was the start of a bloody good weekend of dxing.

Conditions to Nth America were certainly better on the Saturday night into the Sunday early hours. Early on up to 0000 hours conditions were quite nice with many Canadian’s being particularly well received. From around 0100 things started to get noisy and there was just so much splash around. However signals were still there and I managed to find some interesting things. They maybe fodder to some but for The Aussie there were so many new things.

I was pleased with the reception of 1130 KWKH in Shreveport LA. Its interesting that this is yet another station I have heard from Australia. But I have the feeling it is far more difficult here with the dominant WBBR in New York here. Others I have enjoyed so far are 640 CFMJ Richmond Hill (Toronto) as this battles it out with CBN St Johns. There is another music station underneath which is almost impossible to know what it is. The Cuban Radio Progresso made a brief visit. Quite nice at times. I find 640 khz to be one of those really interesting frequencies. So much candy in the lolly shop..

Propagation conditions from 0000 during the night were certainly interesting. There had been some radiation storming and paths were certainly affected. Signals were fading up and down more than usual and it gave a nice mix of things. Like KWKH popping up for a few moments.

If you go into the woods today you are in for a big surprise

  • 570 CMBD Radio Reloj – Santa Clara Cuba. Terrible splash on this channel and then it popped out of the blue at 0030 UTC with an ID and mentions of Havana Cuba
  • 580 CFRA Ottawa ON. Very noisy channel with splash. Got an ID just after 0200 with weather.
  • 590 VOCM St Johns NB. Not exactly dx as this the marker station here in Europe.
  • 610 WIOD Miami Florida  “WIOD is now on the FM dial 100.3” Not bad at all.
  • 640 CMBC Radio Progresso Cuba. Now this was another one of those stations that just popped out of the splash. Not a great signal but a clear ID heard. I think this is often heard better than this.
  • 640 Unid Sports This is an unidentified sports station which is underneath CBN St Johns at around 2358 on Saturday 26 November 2011 at Kasterlee. You will hear the the two stations merge after about 15 seconds, CBN disappears and then towards the end of the recording Radio Progresso fades up with music.
  • 650 UNID 0200 – This is probably WSM with its country and western. Gander is heard as well on this channel // 590 but with regional ads. This clip you hear some sort of music show ID after 20 seconds. WSM is 50kw so its probably a good presumption given the format.
  • 680 CFTR Toronto ON. Now this clip sums up what we are up against dxing in Europe. Next door on 675 is Radio Maria from Holland. Have a listen how ID’s can get destroyed. I was lucky to get this as News 680 with a mention of Toronto.
  • 700-WLW-Cincinatti OhioNice ID with time check and weather
  • 730 CKAC Montreal.A bit messy on the hour but ID in French.
  • 740 CFZM Toronto ON. Very tough channel with splash because of nearby 747 in Holland. It took a bit to find an audible ID. This is messy but if you listen hard you will hear the ID. Easy mentions of Toronto. 740 Heart and Soul as well. This mixes with CHCM Marystown which is // 590 VOCM.
  • 760 WJR Detroit MI. Short and sweet. The only thing you can hear. The ID.
  • 770 WABC New York. Here giving phone numbers for talk show.
  • 780 WBBM Chicago IL. Another digging in the mud ID. This is in two parts with the first mentioning Chicago and WBBM. The second part WBBM news time 7.23
  • 950-CKNB-CampbelltonNBGreat ID. Music station and one of the strongest over the weekend.
  • 970-WZAN-MaineI found a better ID. Heard here at 0200 UTC.
  • 1010 CFRB Toronto– Great ID. Strong and you can’t get much better than this.
  • 1020 KDKA Pittsburgh PAA bit week but clear ID and CBS news.
  • 1050 CHUM Torontowhich now ID’s as TSN. The station it is mixing with is WEPN New York whjch also has sport talk.
  • 1100 WTAM Cleverland OhioAnother scratchy tough one. But its here.
  • 1120 KMOX St Louis MOTough ID but its here. Past the female you will hear a male announcer. “KMOX news top and bottom of the hour”. Might find a better ID as I go through the Perseus recordings.
  • 1130 WBBR New York.Dominant here with Bloomberg. Lots of sports.
  • 1130 KWKH Shreveport LA– Nice ID on fade up over WBBR
  • 1200 CFGO Ottawa.Sports station that loves its football.
  • 1250 CYJE Oakville Ontario. If you stay on a channel long enough sometimes you get lucky and it was in this case. Heard playing gospel songs and then finally an ID. Calls itself 1250 JOY
  • 1390 WEGP Presque Ialand MACoast to Coast radio. Talk of the county.
  • 1580 CKDO Oshawa ON.A bit noisy but between songs clear CKDO ID.

A few new QSL’s that I have scanned over the weekend. A few Navtex on 518 Khz and also some Mediumwave.

Navtex QSL

During the winter here in Holland it is often possible to hear these US Coastguard stations on 518 khz. You have to be lucky with propagation and time slots but you would expect to hear them several times during the season.

518 khz NMA Boston USA

This particular broadcast was from Boston. The QSL states the call NMA and time as 0428 UTC. Its not a rare catch but it certainly can be hard to hear at times. You would expect to hear this during the winter.

This particular broadcast was from New Orleans. The QSL states the call NMG and time as 0306 UTC. Its not a rare catch but it certainly can be hard to hear at times. You would expect to hear this during the winter.

518 khz EJK Valentia Coastguard - Ireland

EJK Valentia Coastguard station in Ireland. Quite regular here in Holland and can be heard via groundwave. Still its always nice to get all of the Navtex stations back.

518 - VCG Riviere-au-Renard - Canada

518 - VCG Riviere-au-Renard - Canada

One of my nicer catches on 518 khz. Its not rare but conditions have to be nice to have a chance of this. It is heard several times a year during the winter months.

1368 khz MANX Radio - Isle of Man

1368 khz MANX Radio - Isle of Man

A nice catch this just given its location. It looks a great place to visit. Heard on 1368 at 1906 UTC. Heard from home here in Den Haag with the Perseus and ALA 1530 loop.

891 - Radio 538 in Hulsberg - The Netherlands

891 - Radio 538 in Hulsberg - The Netherlands

This is a local Dutch station here in Holland. But over the past few years there have been takeovers etc and stations popping up on various frequencies. So it is wise to even get your locals.

2011 June, Weekend of fiddling in the shack. The Hague

When the dx is not around.. what better than to experiment and fix things up in the shack. After Friday nights dx it has dried right up. The terrible thing for me and Friday night is that I discovered today that my Digitek FM5 Yagi is an absolute shocker. I bought this in Geelong (Australia) a few years back and it has never compared against Dave Headlands log Periodic.

After stuffing around with Horizontal, Vertical etc I’ve decided to go with the Log at 45 degrees
Its given me great dx in the past this way so I’m going back to what I know
This home made log periodic has served me very well

2011 January 21-23 Walsoorden Dxpedition

Guido in action

January 21 – 23 saw quite a remarkable Dxpedition to Walsoorden. Conditions were above average and quite a lot of interesting signals were heard on mediumwave from North and Central America’s. In particular signals from around the Caribbean region were quite good. Asian signals were pretty average. The big powerhouse signals from AIR Nagpur, HLKZ on 1566 and WYFR Taiwan on 1557 were nice. However these are often heard from home and you would expect good reception. Apart from these Asians were pretty ordinary.

I am currently going through many Perseus files and it is my intention to put my loggings here in coming days, adding to it as I go. Its quite a job dredging through the 10 khz channels.

Marc Vissers
One other point I failed to mention was that the LPAM stations from England stayed with us for a good part of the day. Signals were heard on 1350, 1278, 1134 etc right up until noon local time.
The success story however was the South American beverage antenna. It appears to have worked very well.

2010 October 17, DX Mafia, Walsoorden

A few photos of the 2010 Walsoorden Dx trip. Attending this Dxpedition were Marc Vissers, Guido Schotmans, Marc van Leemputten and Dave Onley. This Dxpedition has been fairly average but we all still managed to come away with something new.

2010 October 17. The sun always rises in the morning at Walsoorden – Just like a hot air balloon

DX Hot air balloon rides at dawn over Walsoorden
It has been a very busy 24 hours and out of the ashes of the evening (High winds and noise) we actually heard some reasonable signals. Saturday evening the Asian signals were again very strong however nothing really new was observed. Stations like HLAZ on 1566 (Check it out here) and WYFR on 1557 were like Europeans at times. These stations stayed with us for quite a few hours. Remarkable reception indeed.
981 Voice of Guanghua was observed at nice levels at around 1900 UTC. Other stations from Asia heard were 1098 Voice of Asia mixing with CRI, 1413 JOIF Fukuoka at 2000. IRIB Iran on 1503 // 1512 and 531 khz at 2109. 1296 VOA Kabul at 1729. AIR Nagpur was one of the poorer Asians heard on 1566 at 1710

North America
Very strange reception of 590 VOCM on all antennas. This has been the first station in on most nights. Other stations heard were 1470 WLAM, 1540 CHIN and the other commonly heard stations such as 1130 WBBR etc.
We jumped out of bed full of energy needing a huge hit of caffeine to discover that the band was rather average. However. conditions picked up around sunrise and some interesting stations were heard. Levels were not great, but you could pick bits and pieces out.

Some of the stations heard were: 590 VOCM, 660 WFAN, 770 WABC, 790 WAXY, 850 WEEI with ESPN sports, 870 WWL, 930 CFBC, 970 Tent: WZAN, 1030 WBZ, 1130 WBBR, 1140 WQBA with SS, 1620 Rebelde, 580 CFRA.
Just after sunrise (about 0540) after observing a hot air balloon rising from a neighboring farm conditions changed towards Latin America.
Some of the interesting signals Guido and I observed were 1070 which we presume was Radio Mundial Venezuela, TWR Bonaire was again heard on 800 at 0610, Rebelde on 710 and 1180. But we have so many recordings to go through with the Perseus on many frequency’s such as 1060, 740, 1450, 1100.

2010 October 16 Walsoorden, DX – Downtime

We all managed a bit of sleep. A few hours here and a few hours there. DXpeditions are never really a holiday in the sun. It’s like being at work and having to be methodical in what you do. Saturday afternoon we have extreme wind conditions and I presume the static from the antennas is causing so much noise on all the bands. So, it’s a bit of dx downtown. we are hoping that it does not continue. We are still working through our morning recordings. More to come later.

2010 October 16, Walsoorden, Nocturnal Dxing

It’s into the wee hours here in Holland. Marc Vissers and Dave Onley are going the distance. Its 0022 UTC or 2:22am local time. Signals have really picked up from Nth America. In the past hour I have logged 1700 WJCC, 1650 CINA, 1650 CJRS, 1570 CJLV, 1580 CKDO, 1540 CHIN, 1520 WWKB, 1510 WWZN, 1500 WFED. 1320 a tentative logging of CJMR. So overall its worth sitting here. The beer is getting a nudge with Dave and Marc has his mate Jack D sitting beside him.

2010 October 16, Walsoorden, Evening conditions – Friday

A very interesting afternoon and evening listening coupled with a visit or two. Mediumwave provided extremely strong signals from 1566 HLAZ in Korea, signals were also reasonable from 1170 VOA Poro, 1557 WYFR Taiwan, Voice of Guangzhou on 981. 1521 CRI was nice at times along with Iran on 1512 // 1503. Navtex provided the highlight of the evening with Oman being heard by Guido at 1807 on 518 kHz. This was followed by the excellent reception of Pyonsang Korea at 1942.We are all trying to gear ourselves up for a late night, but the pillows are calling.

2010 October 15, Walsoorden – Morning logs

This morning I had the opportunity to use the K9AY antenna which has been erected here on a permanent basis. It does have some problems that it is designed for 160m and some filters in the switching result in poor performance at the lower end of the MW band. It also is not suitable for NDB or Navtex on longwave. However, it is a nice little performer with dx heard from Radio Puerto Cabello on 1290 khz at 0630. All the usual stations were around such as 1130 WBBR, 1510 WWZN, 850 WEEI, 1030 WBZ etc. Thursday evening, I had nice reception of HLAZ on 1566. In fact, the signals rose to insane levels at 1900. Later at 2000 Air Nagpur started to fade in but never dominated. Korea stayed in for a very long period. 1557 Taiwan was there with WYFR at 1915 UTC, but I have heard it better from here. No sign of VOA Poro on 1170 but by this time the Polish beer had started to kick in.

Walsoorden Dxpedition – October 14 – 17 2010

Hello everyone. Welcome to the Walsoorden Dxpedition pages. The Dxpedition unofficially began on Thursday night when I made my way down to Walsoorden in Zeeland (Holland). The rest of the guys arrived bright and early at 8am on the Friday morning. We are here until Sunday and already conditions look promising. We will keep you updated with the more exotic catches that we hear.

100 Day Project – Cape Otway (Victoria – Australia)

One of my all time favorite dx locations throughout the whole world would be Cape Otway situated on the very rugged coastline of South West Victoria. History tells us that many lives were lost along this coastline and in fact it has been named “Shipwreck Coast”. In a dx sense it was a place where we had so many strange events happen.. Dxers having cars breakdown.. people getting injured.. huge storms blowing in off the ocean and who would ever forget finding a decomposed body.. something I stepped in / on as I was putting a beverage antenna out.

The infamous Cape Otway (Shipwreck Coast)
Dx from here was very interesting as well. It was never the best spot in Victoria which I felt was Marlo, however it was more of an all round better location. We had reasonable Nth American signals, a few signals like Radio Star in Peru in on 1030 etc but it also yielded some nice European signals and stations such as Reunion on 666 and Mayotte on 1458 khz..

Cape Otway is renowned for its rain forests

I have just been going through a few tapes of Cape Otway for 1996 and sadly one side in particular of a tape I had Reunion on 666. You can make the FF out quite well but the recording quality is poor.. muffled and difficult to understand. What a shame. I keep saying it.. If only we had the technology back in the 70’s and 80’s and early 90’s such as mini disk and Mp3 players.. let alone laptops to record signals directly to the HDD. Cassette technology was never good and I’m now discovering that a lot of good dx maybe gone through bad recording.. but lets see what I turn up.

A beverage antenna with a twist.. the last bit ended up on the rocks below
It netted us 1030 Radio Star in Lima Peru – The station is now on another frequency
First up here are recordings from 9 / 10 / 11 June 1995 – This was Dxpedition to the cape with Dave Headland
The receiver was Dave’s Drake R7. A mighty fine receiver but very heavy on the juice. This trip we only put out a 200m longwire.
WARNING – Some recordings are unfortuately muffled. (Not all)
1)  1220 khz XEB – 0815 – La B Grande 1220 AM Mexico City, DF
No ID here but this was a regular in Oz and not that special from Marlo. Still it was reasonable dx
2) 1430 kHz – 0836. This was an UNID station. Possibly XEWD Cd. Miguel Aleman or one of the US SS stations. Just never got an ID out of this one.
3) 4505 khz – 0859 Radio Horizonte, Chiclayo, Peru. This is a favourite of mine when Tropical Band dx was still quite reasonable.
4)  783 khz – 6VA Albany This station is situated in the south of Western Australia. These were never easy from Eastern Australia. 6VA is a part of the Radio West Network Here it is heard at 6am local just as the Eastern stations were fading out.
5) 1544 khz Voice of Sahara – 2105 This clandestine was quite a regular into Eastern Australia. This was probably due to the offset frequency. Here it is heard in our local mornings around dawn at 2105 UTC
6) 666 khz Reunion – 2115 (Muffled) This was very difficult to ever get a local ID out of. It carried programs out of Paris and in all the years Dxing from Australia I never got a clear ID. 666 also carried Noumea so one had to be careful. Given that we had Mayotte on 1458 and other African stations at this time you would presume this was Reunion. Also the fact the the Pacific stations had already faded into daylight. Back in the early days of DXing before the ABC stations went 24 hours.. you could hear Reunion on 666 and 729 khz. Yes back in those glory days. When Dxing was made easier by local stations signing off .
7) 1233 khz at 2040. This is probably via Monaco but is heard here with Amazing Grace Interval signal
8) 1530 khz VOA Sao Tome – 1940 put in a lovely signal when local station 2VM Moree faded into daylight. This is heard here at a very nice level at 1940 UTC. A very nice VOA ID but not of Sao Tome.
9) 1458 RFO Mayotte – 2214 One of the better catches from the Cape. This was heard from this location on several occassions. In fact I cannot recall hearing it too many other times except for maybe the Coorong in South Australia. Its heard here in French taking programs from Paris.
10) 1560 XEFAJ – Radio Consentida Mexico City – 0710 UTC This was a regular station when conditions were reasonable in Australia. I think it disappeared in 2004 or so. This is quite a nice ID.
This was our camp in the early 90’s.
This was the infamous trip where the Targo van had an LPG gas leak right next to the camp fire. Craig Edwards and I took the esky of beer and hid behind the sand dunes until all the gas had dissapated. What else could we do? Well maybe put the fire out hahaha.
Something I certainly don’t miss in Holland. Dave Headland seen here covered in bush flies

The 100 Day project – Marlo

Well I’m saying this is the 100 day project.. In real terms this will probably never be finished however I’m determined to finish something that I have been planning for well over 10 years now. I have been hoarding my 150 or so DX tapes (most on C-90 cassette). A lot are probably now in poor state and to be honest these were probably recorded on poor quality recorders / receivers that compared to today were of poor audio. But there are bucket loads of exotic dx waiting here.. I am drooling at the thought of reliving a lot of great dx.. So sit back and enjoy the ride of an another era when I was active in Australia.
First up we visit Marlo in the far eastern part of Victoria.

MARLO (Point Ricardo) Eastern Victoria – Australia

For many years quite a few of us Melbourne Dxers would travel to Marlo over the Queens Birthday weekend in early June. It was a site that was discovered by members of Dx Australia, Dave Headland, Chris Rogers, Sam Dellit, Brian Dodgson etc. What made this site so special was that it was probably the only spot along the southern coastline of Australia where you could hear Latin American dx on a regular basis over the winter period. Not only was it good for Latins but it was a haven for New Zealanders and other Pacific Stations. There were the odd Nth Americans as well and a lot of the time the US stations were different to what you could here a hundred or so km away at Woodside.

My memories of this site was hearing Caribbean Beacon on 1610 at 3pm in our afternoons.. like a local and then at 0600 UTC or so getting that 45 minute opening to latin America on MW. Every year there was something different. One year Peruvians and the next year from Colombia.. It was never the same and it was this in itself that kept taking us back here year after year.
To the Pacific and beyond
David Headland at the Drake SPR4
Dave Onley setup with my Drake SPR4
The dx was always done in the car and here you can see a 9db preamp along with a basic tape recorder in the days before Mini disks, Laptops and MP3 recorders. The Drake SPR4 was sensational in that it used so little power and you could run it nearly all week without flattening your battery.
This was the view of where we sat in the cars Dxing. Our 300m antenna ran through here to the ocean (Bass Strait) It was very rugged going at times as you can see with the following picture. You can see Dave Headland checking out the antenna where ran through what we called Nottingham Forest. A very spooky place indeed. Part of the antenna was ultra thick earthing cable and was left down there for years. In fact it is probably still there and in good condition..
Dave Headland in Nottingham Forest inspecting the beverage antenna
This gives you an idea of where Marlo is. Its about 280km from Melbourne
DX Tapes
Okay you have a bit of background now. Here’s the start of the Marlo project which will go back to about 1993 and there are a few other trips in 1995 and 1996 as well.

Friday 11 June 1993
I have discovered a couple of little gems here that not a lot of dxers would have heard. Firstly this is my one and only ever recording of 1410 WRVV Mobile Alabama

1) 1410 WLVV Mobile Alabama One of my best ever catches

2) 1026 1ZN Radio Northlands Whangarei (New Zealand)

3) 1440 1XK Tauranga – Te Reo (Maori Radio) If I can recall this was a low powered test

Saturday August 8 1993 *SPECIAL
This is a very special recording. Consider the distance from Australia across the Pacific ocean and then again right across the entire USA to the east coast. This was recorded at Marlo Victoria on 8th of August 1993

1) 1560 WQEW New York – Before it became Radio Disney and just listen to the quality. I have never heard it this good in The Netherlands.

Saturday June 11 1994
Back at Marlo a year later and this time with Craig Edwards who made his way over from Adelaide in South Australia.

1) 1593 1XCB Auckland – Reo Atumotu “The Voice Of The Islands” was a Samoan language radio station that was established in 1993.  The station was operated by United Christian Broadcasters (UCB) and broadcast on 1593 AM (call-sign 1XCB). In early 1997, Reo Atumotu ceased broadcasting due to financial difficulties, resulting from a lack of funding.  The 1593 AM frequency was later used to launch Rhema Broadcasting Group’s Southern Star network in Auckland.

Life with the Perseus

A few months back I took delivery of the Perseus SDR receiver. It really has revolutionized the way I dx.. however if you think its going to make dxing any easier.. think again. Its even more time consuming than real time dx.

The Beast Perseus SDR

A quick learning curve – No valves
The first thing that struck me was the storage factor. I have always been a dxer who likes to keep everything. But this is just not Practical with a Perseus.. You cannot leave it on all night.. for a whole month and expect to save the data. It records a wav file of 1600khz (The entire MW band) at about 4 gb per 5 minutes or so.. So an evening session from midnight to dawn you can very easily fill up a 250GB hard drive. So unless you have many many HDD’s.. its just not a practical thing to do. I’m looking forward to the days of cheap 500TB hard drives.

Tropical Bands QSL’s

During the late 70’s and early 80’s the Tropical bands on 90 and 60 metres produced some wonderful dx from Latin America, Indonesia, PNG and Africa. Here are a few QSL’s that I collected over the years.

NDB Beacons

I started NDB dxing in about 2009. I had never done NDB back in Australia and it was only when I went on a DXpedition to Walsoorden with the Belgians from DX Antwerp that I got bitten by the bug.

I am a Mediumwave dxer first but I do dabble in NDB, DGPS, Navtex, DSC etc. However these days it is only done on DXpeditions due to noise at home. For sometime dx was good from my QTH in Den Haag however after a few years it became impossible. So many new electronic devices in peoples apartments started blanketing the bands. Utility dx. I now live in Rijswijk and noise levels are just as bad. So its nice to look back.

(The Hague November 2009)
NDB dx has snuck up on me a bit and all of a sudden I’ve become quite hooked. Just this evening I was quite shocked to see that in just 3 weeks I had logged over 70 NDB beacons when I thought it had been a bit hard at times.
Living in Den Haag I certainly do not hear a lot of the beacons others receive in Holland, yet when I analyse what I have done in 3 weeks its not so bad. I’m still learning and searching and time is a factor. Most of my dx is done on a Friday or Saturday evening.
For NDB I use my Icom R75 with a 250 hz filter kindly lent to me by Roloef Bakker. I also have his mini whip which is quite surprising. For such a little antenna unit it certainly pulls in a lot of signals not only on LW but MW as well. I also use the ALA 1530 antenna for the longwave beacons. I do have Quantum phaser but I don’t use it that often unless I have noise problems.

Walsoorden DXpedition October 2009

(Zeeland – The Netherlands)

The Walsoorden Crew in 2009

It’s always nice to get away on DXpeditions and the past two years I have been lucky enough to spend some time with the Belgian Dxers from DX Antwerp at Walsoorden in Zeeland, The Netherlands. It’s a bit of a tricky place to get to having to travel in and out of Holland and Belgium several times across water and through tunnels etc. The Dx though from this site has been excellent and the reputation continues to grow.

In October 2008 and again in February / October 2009 I had the opportunity to travel to Walsoorden in Zeeland to dx with the Belgian guys from Dx Antwerp. They are a great bunch of guys to dx with and remind me so much of the way the Aussie’s go about their DXing. Mind you the Belgians are probably a little more organised than what we were.

I came away from the February trip a re-born Dxer. Of course I am still a very passionate Mediumwave Dxer, however I was shown another very interesting side of the hobby by Marc Vissers, John Bernaerts, Jos De Jong, and Vince Wagner. Navtex Dxing is a really cool way of Dxing. You tune into either 518 or 490 khz in RTTY mode and via the receiver and sound card of your receiver you can start receiving the Navigation forecasts. Well its not so much the looking at the forecasts and messages that is interesting, but its where some of the stations on longwave are propagating from. Miami, Chesapeake Bay, Turkey, Israel etc. Its all quite fascinating waking up in the morning, checking the log and seeing what has propagated overnight.

The other two things I learnt on the trip were NDB Beacons on longwave and also HFDL / AirNav on the HF Band. NDB Beacon’s of course is a huge challenge and learning morse code again is something I never thought I would do. However with the aid of Argo it is getting to be a bit easier. The unfortunate thing for me around Den Haag is the noise levels on LW. Maybe I can convince the guy next door with his fish pond pump to put a filter on it. I’m convinced that’s where the majority of noise comes from. (Talk about the neighbours water path.. blaaah!)
